Barnfield West in top 10% schools nationwide
Barnfield West Academy has gained national recognition for being in the top 10% of schools in England for adding value to their students’ achievements at GCSE.
The Leagrave High Street school scored highly on the SSAT value-added scale for achieving five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C including English and Maths.
The top 10% of schools in the country all scored 10 points or more. Barnfield West Academy achieved an outstanding value-added score of 12 points.
Every school in the country is ranked according to how much value they have added to the scores their students were expected to achieve in their GCSE results in 2011. This is determined by the progress the students in a school have made between their test results at age 11 and 16, according to the measure used by SSAT – the representative body for schools.
The school has been presented with a certificate recognising the outstanding student progress, which will now be proudly displayed in the reception area of its impressive £30million building.
Barnfield Chief Executive Sir Peter Birkett said: “We focus on keeping the students centre stage - it is of paramount priority to ensure their success so this kind of recognition is very important to us.
“Well done to all students, staff and Principal Andy Hardy who all worked so hard to secure this result – it is the exceptional teaching and learning inside the Academy and the sharing of best practise across the Federation that leads to wonderful achievement such as this.
“We are expecting another record-breaking set of GCSE results this summer so I look forward to celebrating again shortly with a new year group of stars.”
Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT, said: “Barnfield West Academy should be congratulated for their stunning performance in adding value to their students’ achievements.
“They are one of the best schools in the country at outperforming expectations for their pupils and improving their future prospects. There is plenty that other schools could learn from Barnfield West Academy’s success.
“These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team at Barnfield West Academy and a vindication of their belief in high expectations, good teaching and ambition for every young person.
“Successful schools like Barnfield West Academy understand the value of data, such as these value added scores, in helping to ensure all young people perform to the very best of their ability. The value-added measures show how schools make a difference and raise achievement above expectations.”
